The Fall Of A Sturdy Bird and Rise of A New President
On the long trip west from Tennessee to Oregon, Amanda and I took a small detour to film and hike around the orange globs and eery martian landscape of Goblin Valley State Park, UT. We woke early to get footage with the glowing morning light before the heat of the day hit. But before long my little sturdy bird had run herself into one of the valley's tall spires causing us to spend the next few hours scrambling around to rescue my eye in the sky.
After realizing we were no match for the crumbling sandy peaks, I left with the promise to return one day soon, equipped with the proper tools to rescue my one and only drone baby. You can watch and read about how it all turned out as well my thoughts on waking up nestled in the terracotta orange goblin spires to a newly elected, President Trump.
After arriving back in Oregon I used the last chunk of my savings to buy another drone from an old dude named, Gary off Craigslist and began to plan my return to Goblin Valley for the ultimate rescue mission. A good friend and former Green Beret/Special Forces dude I call affectionately call David Drone Daddy, (we matched on Tinder a few years back then met up with for the first time at a secluded cabin in the Idaho mountains while I was home for the holidays, but only after explaining to my father I would be safe and that's just the reality of dating now... well we never dated for whatever reason but instead keep in touch from across the country, sending each other random memes and having text convos about topics ranging from reptilians to feminism or tramatic brain injury and politics. But I digress)...he was the first person I called when my drone went MIA to see if he could help me locate it and when that didn't work he found a guy in SLC that was willing to meet me in the state park upon my return with climbing gear to help pluck my drone from the crumbling towers. So I hit the road. Again.
Well, the dude never showed. I didn't rescue shit. But, nestled in the spires without service I woke wondering if I was now in a Clinton or Trump kinda reality. As soon as I got service I texted Drone Daddy so see who won. Turns out the tall spires surrounding my tent weren't the only orangish-goblin like victors....I had woke to newly elected Trump. Frankly, I wasn't surprised in the least. I'd spent enough time on the road and in small town diners to know how a large portion of the counrty felt about both candiddates. What I was taken aback by was the response from my peers however, as the wave of distain began to wash over my IG feed.
All said and done, it was an adventure. This country is full of people and places that can eat you up- take away what you hold as dear and fill your plate with tough pills to swallow. But, that's all dependent on where you put your focus, I suppose. If you spend a few moments to take in the big picture or at least try to see the big picture- consider everything and everyone outside of your immediate gaze or comfort zone, you can start to see the beauty in it all if you chose to. Trump as President might just be the catalyst that unites us and gets a lot of people talking or more importantly listening to each other that never used to in this country. Time will tell, it'll be an adventure to say the least.
